Manhattan Tower 1932 Restored

Manhattan Tower 1932

This is a partially restored version of a public domain movie Manhattan Tower, an entertaining depression era film. The movie has several intertwined stories about some workers in this office building. Manhattan tower is a movie which has many modern resonances in the twenty first century. The theme of crooked businessmen, industrial failures, and common people being cheated is familiar and all too real after the Enron affair. It has a heart warming romance, some comedy, and many good shots of the Empire State building which inspired this tale. The movie was made the year after the Empire State building was opened. For nearly half a century it was the worlds tallest building, and is probably the most famous. I have included a complete cast list so you can watch for some well known actors such as Walter Brennan in character parts. There are other familiar faces in small parts that are not identified.

The original was a VHS tape made from a fair 16mm copy of the movie. This copy is fairly complete and only about 1½ minutes seem to be missing. The video was slightly sharpened and the audio track was much improved by noise reduction, equalization, and tick/pop removal. The video jitter was partially reduced, and many defects were removed either by software or by hand. Unfortunately the available consumer software could not automatically remove the VHS/poor transfer wobble, or totally remove the video spots. Only some of the worst defects were removed by hand. The use of automatic video brightness control washed out details and caused brightness changes that could not be easily compensated. In addition the original copy was badly framed which cut off part of the picture. This version can play without any judder because it has been detelecined back to the original 24fps. This is probably the most watchable and listenable copy available of this movie until a better copy is made from a good print.

2012-12-22 The original upload had a bad goof where a section of the movie was duplicated and overlayed over a later section. It has been fixed and updated.

Subject: Great restoration of good film
I watch many movies from the 1930s and am used to tolerating bad sound and/or less-than-good images, but this version is excellent. There were no distractions with the quality - well done!

The movie itself is very watchable and entertaining though the only cast member I recognized was Walter Brennan in a minor role.

better try the other version?
There are segments of long duration with only sound and blank screens. some show up in the shown stills.

No problem with the file downloading or playing as it's suppose to. The other person in question was experiencing site issues, or internet problems, or a browser software glitch at the time. Works as it's suppose to.

Subject: The restored vs the ipod version is a pretty good version, but it comes from ultimately the same source without any noise reduction. Both are almost exactly the same length, but I added a readable full cast/crew listing at the end. There is probably more visible wobble in the restored version in some scenes. The restored one has less video and audio noise as well as less flicker. The wobble is due to the original transfer and is almost impossible to remove. Stabilizing the overall image may make the wobble more obvious. Ultimately you have to judge for yourself.

I don't know what the problem is, but it may be that a large number of people are downloading it. Already 460 people have downloaded it. I have submitted other videos without any problems, and this one uses the same encoding as the others. I have no control over how the downloading is done.

Subject: Really want to see this..but can't!
There is something wrong with this upload, sorry to say. I can't view it, nor can I download the video files. I don't have problems with either process and have downloaded several videos, unfortunately there is something wrong about this posting and hoping you can redo it as I REALLY want to see this, and the restoration work you've done.

I hate to say this but the following copy looks a lot better than your restoration.
